What is a Cadet Fencer?
A Cadet is just another name for a fencer who is U17.
Strictly speaking, this means "Under 17 on January 1st of the current season". However, many cadet competitions are aimed towards selecting the team for the Cadet World Championships, which is selected in February and the event is in April. As a result, most cadets effectively move on to being Juniors (under 20) after either Feb or April in their last Cadet year.
An exception to this is the Cadet Winton, which takes place in late December, a few days before the Jan 1st "rollover" of year groups. Since it is still officially in the previous year, many fencers who have already moved up to the Juniors still qualify as Cadets for that competition.
Although the term "Cadet" applies to any U17 fencer, the general usage implies that the fencer concerned is participating in the series of competitions that gain points in the GB Cadet Ranking Lists
