What category of membership does a cadet need?

Until recently, a cadet fencer who was young enough to qualify for a Musketeer membership (U13) but was old enough to fence in Opens before that membership expired, needed to upgrade their membership from Musketeer to Junior before entering an Open. This used to be important to maintain sufficient insurance cover.

This is no longer the case, as British Fencing, who run the insurance scheme, levy a flat £20 fee from all members - the difference between different categories is only in the element which goes to the home country. As a result, all categories of membership have the same insurance benefits, and there is no need for young cadets to upgrade.

However, some competition organisers who have many years experience of the older system, may not be fully aware of the changed situation. Until everyone catches up, you may be asked to upgrade your membership on checking in to an adult competition. You can choose to pay up, or to argue the point, as you prefer, but taking a copy of this page with you, may help your case.
