How do Cadets get selected to represent Great Britain?

There are two types of foreign competitions where a fencer might be selected to fence for Great Britian*

There are "Cadet Foreign" events, usually very strong European events, where Great Britain is invited to send a representative group of fencers. The number of fencers selected varies from weapon to weapon - generally the Sabre committee send most fencers (up to 25) and the foil and epee committees only select between 10 and 15. They are normally chosen from the highest ranked individuals in the cadet ranking lists, although selectors reserve the rights to ignore fencers who have poor disciplinary records, or to favour fencers whose past results have been good, but have suffered recently from illness or injury.

These foreign competitions are chosen as being amongst the strongest available - often there will be more than 10 nations represented, including some of the best U17 fencers in the world.

At the absolute pinnacle is the selection to represent Great Britain at the World Cadet Championships. Team of 3, or at most 4, fencers are selected, almost always from the top fencers in the rankings, but with the same provisos about discipline and injury as before.

*(Note - the international fencing body, FIE only recognises Great Britain, and not England, Scotland, Wales and NI in keeping with the precedent set by the International Olympic Committee. The home nations do have some limited international representation, within the Home Internationals, and as part of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation)
